Undertone Series

The harmonic series of a sound consists of multiples of the fundamental frequency or overtones, which leads directly to the concepts of dominant and major chord. By using an analogy, a supposed undertone series has sometimes been used in order to introduce the concepts of subdominant and minor chord.
