28 new chargers

Committed to the environment. The Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) has installed a total of 34 22 kW electric vehicle charging points in the University's covered car parks since 2024. This installation has been made possible thanks to grants aimed at promoting the installation of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in the Valencian Community. With the launch of 28 new chargers, the UPV is now fully compliant with legislation regarding charging points in relation to available parking spaces.

The initial project envisaged installing 20 dual charging points at the Vera Campus, serving 37 parking spaces. Subsequently, in the project that served as the basis for the tender and installation, the scope initially set out in the application was expanded with a total of 28 dual charging points for 56 parking spaces. These, together with the 5 existing ones, bring the total to 34, serving 68 electric vehicles.

NextGenerationEU co-financing

The initial investment for the project amounted to €379,160. The grant awarded was €75,832. This grant is co-financed by the European Union – NextGenerationEU and forms part of Spain's Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.

With this initiative, the car parks at the School of Telecommunications, the Sports Centre, the School of Industrial Engineering, and the School of Geodesy, Cartography and Surveying Engineering will have these chargers for the first time, meaning that eight car parks on the Vera campus will have three dual-charging points; there will be four at the CPI campus, two at the Gandia campus and one at the Alcoi campus.

This complies with the regulations derived from RDL 29/2021, which stipulates that car parks with more than 20 spaces must have a minimum charging infrastructure. The Universitat Politècnica de València is thus seeking to set an example in the energy transition.

José Capilla: "A firm step forward in the UPV's commitment to sustainability"

The Rector of the Universitat Politècnica de València, José Capilla, emphasised that "the launch of these new charging points represents a firm step forward in the UPV's commitment to sustainability and the energy transition". In this regard, he highlighted that the university "has not only achieved full compliance with current regulations, but has decided to go further, providing the university community with infrastructure that promotes cleaner and more responsible mobility".

Furthermore, José Capilla noted that "the growth in the use of these chargers in just two years demonstrates that strategic decisions regarding sustainability have a real impact on the habits of the university community". The Rector added that "the UPV must set an example, leading the necessary changes from within the university to move towards a more efficient, innovative energy model that is aligned with current climate challenges".

Two years

Two years on from the installation of the charging points, data published by the Vice-Rectorate for Sustainable Campus Development shows that the university community is using them more and more. From 33 users in February 2024, with 108 charging sessions, the figure has risen this year to 115 users, with 500 charging sessions in June 2026. This represents a consumption of 6.88 MWh.

According to data from June 2026, on the Vera campus, the car park with the highest number of charging sessions was the Nexus car park, with 137 sessions, followed by ETSIAMN with 123 and Rectorate with 92. In June 2026, 38 sessions were recorded on the Gandia campus and 44 on the Alcoy campus. This represents a new record for charging sessions. This, however, has not led to an increase in the number of vehicles arriving at the car parks.
