[ 23/04/2026 ]

On Friday, 24 April, at 11 AM, the Paraninfo auditorium at the Universitat Politècnica de València will host the academic ceremony to confer degrees on new graduates from the previous academic year, as well as honorary doctorates on Cristina Garmendia and Francisco Chinesta. You can follow the ceremony live via this link.

The Governing Council of the UPV, meeting on 20 October last year, approved the appointment of Cristina Garmendia as Doctor Honoris Causa, following a proposal from the university's Department of Economics and Social Sciences.

It highlights "her extraordinary professional career as a biologist, entrepreneur and leader in the field of innovation and science in Spain". Among other professional achievements, it highlights "her exemplary track record in the academic, scientific, technological and social fields, as well as her contribution to the development of the Spanish R&D&I system". Her sponsor, who will deliver the laudatio, will be Professor Belén Picó, Vice-Rector for Research at the UPV.

Real-time simulation

The appointment of Francisco Chinesta was approved at the Governing Council meeting held on 28 July last year, following a proposal from the Council of the School of Industrial Engineering, the Council of the School of Aerospace Engineering and Industrial Design, and the Council of the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering.

His appointment deserves special mention because "Francisco Chinesta has revolutionised computational engineering by developing real-time simulation methods that bridge the gap between science and industry. His work has opened up access to advanced simulation tools, accelerating innovation and its direct transfer to society."

Chinesta's sponsors are Dr Juan Antonio García Manrique and Dr Francisco Javier Fuenmayor Fernández. Dr García Manrique will deliver the laudatio for the doctoral candidate.
