ETSII inauguration
Ángel Ortiz Bas: 'Thank you for the privilege you have given me to be the Dean of this wonderful school'
[ 06/03/2026 ]
'Pride, continuity and ambition for the future' sum up the momentum that has led Ángel Ortiz Bas to take on his second term at the helm of the School of Industrial Engineering at the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV). He revalidates his position for the next six years, after standing as the only candidate in the recent elections. (Results). His goal is to 'consolidate the projects already underway and strengthen the school's position as a national and international benchmark', something he began when he took office in 2022.
Ángel Ortiz began his inauguration speech by expressing his heartfelt gratitude to his family and stating that 'taking on the leadership of the ETSII is one of the greatest professional and personal honours I could imagine'." Ángel Ortiz is an industrial engineer and studied at the school he now heads. The Rector of the UPV, José E. Capilla, presided over the inauguration ceremony held on 24 February. It was a birthday present for the new director, who was born in 1967 in the district of San Bartolomé, in Orihuela.
Technological change and infrastructure are the immediate priorities
In the short term, the main challenge will be adapting to the new technological paradigm. The emergence of artificial intelligence, new teaching methodologies, and industrial transformation are forcing us to rethink education. 'We must think about the employability of our students and prepare them for the scenario they will encounter in companies,' he said.
In his opinion, methodological change requires a decisive upgrade of infrastructure. The ETSII is currently the school with the highest number of students at the UPV and suffers from significant space saturation. Ángel Ortiz called for "classrooms adapted to new methodologies, multipurpose spaces, a FABLAB, 21st-century laboratories, and an exam hall that guarantees assessments with maximum guarantees of fairness. We don't just need more space; we need better spaces. '
He also called for no further delays in the electoral commitment made a year ago by the Rector to construct the new ETSII building on plot 5O.' We are not asking for privileges; we are asking for consistency and shared responsibility," he said.
Aspirations
In the long term, his goal is to position the ETSII as the best centre in the field of industrial engineering in Spain and to strengthen its international profile. Ángel Ortiz hopes that, in six years, 'I will be remembered as a Dean who worked with passion and dedication for his school'.
Outside the UPV, one of his hobbies is golf, which he shares with his two sons. It is a luxury to spend hours with them walking around the course and sharing those conversations that really make me very happy.
