The Universitat Politècnica de València receives the Cátedra China award for opening the first Spanish university centre in China
[ 11/02/2026 ]
The Cátedra China awards, in the category of Academic Institution, have recognised the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) in their ninth edition. This award from the Cátedra China Foundation recognises the extensive educational exchanges and academic agreements established by the UPV with China. Specifically, in 2025, the opening of the first Spanish university centre in China, the Beihang Valencia Polytechnic Institute (BVPI), stands out.
The Rector of the UPV, José E. Capilla, convinced that the major scientific and technological challenges will be solved in the Asia-Pacific region, is committed to strengthening ties with Chinese academic institutions, and extending the 'multicultural experience not only to students and researchers but also to the university's management and technical staff'. He explained this in an interview with Mundo Global, the magazine of the China Chair Foundation.
The awards ceremony was held on 7 February in Madrid. It was attended by the Vice-Rector for Internationalisation and Communication at the UPV, José Monserrat del Río, on behalf of the Rector.
Strengthening relations
These awards highlight the excellence, commitment and contribution of individuals and institutions whose work has been decisive in strengthening relations between the People's Republic of China and Spain.
In addition to the UPV, the 9th Cátedra China Awards honoured Dr Diego González Rivas in the Person category, the Usera Project of the Madrid City Council in the Cultural Project category, and Air China in the Company category for promoting relations between Spain and China.
The awards ceremony brought together representatives from the institutional, academic and business spheres, linked to dialogue, cooperation and understanding between the two countries.
