GreenMetric, the leading university environmental ranking, has recognised the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) as one of the 250 universities worldwide most committed to sustainability and the environment.

In its latest edition, the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2025, the university, currently led by José E. Capilla, ranks 240th.

Top 5 nationally and the only technological university in Spain featured in the ranking

At the continental level, the UPV ranks 62nd, while nationally, GreenMetric recognises the UPV as the fourth best university in Spain, as well as being the highest ranked in the Valencian Community and the only technological university in the country to appear in a ranking which, this year, in its sixteenth edition, analyses a total of 1,745 university institutions from 105 countries.

Likewise, of the six criteria used to compile the ranking – energy efficiency and the fight against climate change; waste management; water resources; infrastructure; promotion of non-polluting transport, and environmental education – the UPV stands out in four of them, where it is in the national top 10: environmental education (2nd), water resources (3rd, and world top 100), promotion of non-polluting transport (4th) and energy efficiency and the fight against climate change (7th).

52 indicators analysed

To compile its annual ranking, GreenMetric analyses a total of 52 indicators, ranging from the use of low-consumption electrical machinery to the implementation of innovative construction programmes, including the number of renewable energy sources on the different campuses, electricity consumption per capita, the proportion of renewable energy production in relation to the total, the existence of greenhouse gas emission reduction programmes, the proportion of total carbon footprint per campus population, university programmes on climate change, the existence of waste recycling programmes, actions against paper and plastic waste, and the treatment of organic and inorganic waste, hazardous waste and wastewater, among many others.

Developed by the University of Indonesia (UI) since 2010 (95 universities from 35 countries participated in its inaugural edition), GreenMetric is the benchmark ranking in the field of university sustainability. Its prestige and impact, in terms of awareness and results, are internationally recognised.
