[ 13/01/2026 ]

The Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) has 121 researchers among the most influential in the world, according to the latest update of the Ranking of the World Scientists: World's Top 2% Scientists, compiled by Stanford University.

Of the 121 UPV researchers on the list, 45 appear in both rankings.

The ranking comprises two lists: one that ranks scientists based on their scientific career, and another that focuses exclusively on publications from the past year.

Scientific career

In the ranking that evaluates the entire scientific career, the highest-ranked researcher from the UPV is Avelino Corma, who ranks 33rd worldwide. Corma conducts his research at the Institute of Chemical Technology (CSIC-UPV), followed by Juan Antonio Bisquert and Hermenegildo García, also from the Institute of Chemical Technology (ITQ).

Rounding out the top five UPV researchers according to the World's Top 2% Scientists are José Capmany, from the Institute of Telecommunications and Multimedia Applications (iTEAM – UPV), and Jaime Lloret, from the Research Institute for Integrated Management of Coastal Areas (IGIC – UPV Gandia).

Annual top

The ranking of the most cited UPV researchers over the last year is also headed by Avelino Corma, with Juan Antonio Bisquert repeating in second place. They are followed by Jaime Lloret and Hermenegildo García. Pau Amaro Seoane, from the Research Institute for Multidisciplinary Mathematics (IMM - UPV), closes the top 5.

It is worth noting that the UPV names included in Stanford's top 2% stand out in a wide range of fields of knowledge, including chemistry, telecommunications, artificial intelligence, electronics, physics, agricultural engineering, industrial engineering, and computer science, among others.

Indicators analysed

The Ranking of the World Scientists: World's Top 2% Scientists identifies the leading researchers worldwide, representing approximately 2% of all scientists globally. It includes standardised data on citations, h-index and a wide range of bibliometric indicators. Research staff are classified into 22 scientific fields and 174 subfields, based on Scopus data provided by Elsevier through the ICSR Lab.
