UPV Press, a structure of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) responsible for supporting training, research and the transfer of knowledge generated in the scientific community, is part of the newly created Ibero-American Council for University and Academic Publishing (CIEUA), a regional cooperation platform conceived as a permanent space for joint work to promote science in the region, promote Spanish, Portuguese and multilingualism, and advance the democratisation of knowledge through open science.
The initiative, formalised on Wednesday, 3 December, during the Guadalajara International Book Fair (Mexico), at a meeting that brought together representatives of government agencies, cultural institutions and universities from across Ibero-America, includes UPV Press through the Union of Spanish University Publishers (UNE), one of the 15 founding associations of the CIEUA and whose vice-presidency is currently held by María Remedios Pérez García, head of UPV Press.
The CIEUA, which already represents more than 500 publishers, aims to establish itself as a key player in the regional integration of university and scholarly publishing.
Its mission is to strengthen interregional collaboration and give continuity to the 2024 Guadalajara Agreement, promoting multilingualism in science, open access, ethical innovation in publishing processes and the creation of an Ibero-American academic corpus, as well as encouraging research and good publishing practices.
From next January, the CIEUA Council will be made up of seven members representing Spain (1), Portugal (1) and Latin America (5). It will coordinate various strategic lines, including publishing quality, development of the Ibero-American catalogue, strengthening of scientific journals, co-publishing programmes, professional mobility, and collaborative projects in open access.
With its incorporation, the UPV reinforces its global commitment to rigorous, open, and inclusive sciences, promoted and articulated in Spanish, Portuguese, and other languages of the Ibero-American region.
Established as a service in 1986 according to the internal operating regulations approved by the UPV governing board, the structure of the current UPV Press has since functioned as a support service for teaching management based on the UPV's curriculum, while also marketing its catalogue to both the internal community and the general public through its distribution network.
In 2010, with the approval of new regulations governing its operation as a publishing house and the establishment of an advisory board for its constitution, renewal, and performance, UPV Press structured its collection into specialised collections and series, creating a catalogue organised according to selection criteria and target audience. That year, the publisher also expanded its coverage by supporting research through scientific journals, conferences and monographs in specialised collections.
With almost four decades of work, UPV Press has established itself as a recognised scientific publisher with transparent criteria, becoming a highly valued option both for those who want to publish with scientific rigour and for those who wish to access verified and proven knowledge, with the guarantees of a professional edition that, in turn, enhances its international profile and prestige.
In this regard, since its establishment as UPV Press in 2010, a distinction has been made between support for the UPV as a university service and the operation of a professional publishing house. To distinguish the latter, the edUPV brand was created as a hallmark of selection processes, technical review, style correction, scientific evaluation, and academic and social dissemination.
The specialised edUPV label is added to publications that have undergone a selection, review and evaluation process, so that the edUPV brand is included in the publication credits, identifying the quality of the processes followed for editing and publication, regardless of those carried out in the specific collection in which the publication is included.
