In 2024, the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) successfully reduced CO2 emissions per person by 21.9% compared to 2023. This consolidates the university community's commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency.
The indicator of tons of CO2 per person (t CO2/pers) is the most relevant in assessing the institution's environmental impact and directly reflects progress toward achieving carbon neutrality by 2030. In addition, the UPV's total carbon footprint has been reduced by 17% compared to 2023 (from 3,256 t CO2 in 2023 to 2,702 t CO2 in 2024) and by 83% since 2014 (from 19,153 t CO2, the year it began measuring).
These results are the outcome of a comprehensive strategy combining energy efficiency, sustainable mobility, responsible waste management, and environmental awareness.
As the Rector of the UPV, José E. Capilla, highlights, "this achievement shows that when the entire university community gets involved—students, research staff, teaching staff, and administrative staff—results are achieved. We have managed to reduce our emissions per person significantly, and this positions us as a clear benchmark in sustainability both within and outside Spain."
Capilla emphasises that "achieving an 83% reduction since 2014 is a source of pride and a testament to the UPV's constant effort in environmental issues. I would like to especially thank the Vice-Rector for Sustainable Development and her team for their dedication, rigour, and strategic vision, which have made these measurable and recognised advances possible."
The UPV holds the "I calculate, reduce, and offset" seal, awarded by the Spanish Office for Climate Change (OECC) of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO). It is an official recognition that certifies the measurement, reduction, and partial offsetting of its CO? emissions. This seal positions the UPV as a national benchmark in sustainability and climate commitment.
The impact of these actions is also reflected at the international level. In the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2025, compiled by the British consulting firm Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the UPV ranks among the 200 most sustainable universities in the world (179th place), as well as being the best polytechnic university in Spain and the number one university in the Valencian Community in terms of sustainability.
With these advances, the Universitat Politècnica de València reaffirms its commitment to combating climate change and its role as a leading institution in building a greener and more sustainable future.
This Saturday, November 22, to offset the carbon footprint for 2024, the reforestation day Sembrando futuro (Sowing the Future) will be held in Fuente la Reina, with the campaign "1 concert, 1 tree." 450 trees will be planted, creating a new forest of 4,500 square meters. This will capture 61 tons of CO2.
