Young-Hyo Park, Consul General of the Republic of Korea in Spain: 'I hope that the King Sejong Institute will be established on the UPV campus next year'

[ 06/11/2025 ]

The Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) aims to inaugurate a new branch of the King Sejong Institute, the world's leading international educational centre for Korean culture, on its Valencia campus for the 2026-2027 academic year.

To achieve this, the institution currently led by José E. Capilla has submitted a joint proposal with Kyungwoon University to the international call of the King Sejong Foundation, an organisation born in honour of the monarch who created the Korean alphabet (Hangul) in the mid-15th century.

As part of this project, the UPV received a visit from Young-Hyo Park, Consul General of the Republic of Korea in Spain, who expressed his wish to see the new branch at the UPV become a reality.

"It is a great pleasure for me to visit the UPV, whose hospitality I appreciate. The purpose of my visit is to discuss the establishment of the King Sejong Institute on the UPV campus, which I hope will take place next year,‘ said Park, who also expressed his desire for it to ’develop as a centre for cultural and scholar exchange between Valencia and Korea‘, as well as describing the meeting as ’a historic milestone in opening new horizons in Valencian-Korean cooperation".

Elena De la Poza: ‘It would be a major step forward for our university’

After the meeting, Elena De la Poza, Vice-Rector for Employment, Continuing Education and Languages at the UPV, pointed out that ‘bringing the UPV and the Republic of Korea closer together would be a major step forward for our university, as it would allow the university community not only to access the Korean language, which in itself would be a success given the country's technological importance as a developer of business projects, but also to learn about its culture first-hand."

252 branches worldwide

The King Sejong Institute, which currently has 252 centres around the world, including three in Spain, functions as a cultural and educational centre offering Korean language courses (from beginner to advanced levels) and organising cultural activities (singing competitions, calligraphy workshops, film screenings, etc.) to bring the culture of this Asian country closer to other communities.
