Hangzhou Campus

Nine months. That's how long it took the Universitat Politècnica de València to establish a campus in China. A record time to achieve a milestone in the history of Spanish Higher Education. This opportunity is made possible by the Organic Law of the University System. The Rector of the UPV, José Capilla, has invited the Spanish Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, Diana Morant, to see the project firsthand. (Video)

On 15 October, the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) inaugurated the Beihang València Polytechnic Institute (BVPI). It is located in Hangzhou and will be the first university to offer official in-person teaching abroad.

"Then engineer"

The minister, who holds a degree in Telecommunications Engineering from the UPV, recalled her student days when she was told, “Don't you want to be an engineer? Then engineer. This is what engineering is: innovating and inventing. This is using the tools we have in our country, such as the Organic Law of the University System and developing it in a pioneering way, and this also means taking risks".

The Rector of the UPV, José Capilla, has announced that "the goal is to start in September. We already have around 40 and 50 academic staff involved, and the language of instruction will be English".

The Beihang València Polytechnic Institute is located in the Hangzhou Campus. It has one million square meters, of which 2,000 square meters will be leased to the UPV for 20 years. Beihang University is ranked 101st in the world, recognised as the best in Aerospace Engineering and among the top 10 in three areas. The Ecole Nationale de l'Aviation Civile and INSA are also present on this Chinese campus.

Hangzhou is the capital of Zhejiang province, and one of the main hubs of technological innovation in China. It was the capital of the Chinese empire and is now known as the Chinese Silicon Valley. It is home to large corporations such as Alibaba, DeepSeek, TikTok, and Unitree.

Complete estudies in China

The centre has been selected by the Chinese Ministry of Education as a pilot project for the Sino-Foreigner Excellence Engineering Program. It is also expected to be a hub for cultural exchange. According to Morant, this alliance “will make us better and will enable technological advances hand in hand with this internationalisation, which is unprecedented in our country.”

The UPV campus in Hangzhou will accommodate 2,000 students. It will offer four Bachelor's Degrees: Communication Networks and Systems, Computer Science and Technology, Intelligent Manufacturing and Robotics Engineering. In addition, there will be six master's degrees and four doctoral programs.

It is expected that, soon, UPV students in the Valencian Community will be able to complete their studies in China and do their internships there.
