A total of 55 Heads of Department (30), Directors of UPV University Research Institutes (11) and Directors of UPV-specific Research Structures (14) have taken up their posts during the inauguration ceremony of José E. Capilla's second term as Rector of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV).
They did so by swearing and/or promising to honour their positions with enthusiasm and the will to continue contributing together to building the best university so that it, in turn, has the greatest possible positive impact on the society around us.
Representing the collective of departments, Gabriela Ribes Giner, re-elected as Head of the Business Organisation Department (DOE-UPV), took the floor and, in an emotional speech addressed to her colleagues, praised the work of the 41 departments existing at the UPV, which next year will be responsible for a total of 41,119 credits from the Course Offer Process, spread over around 2,500 undergraduate courses and 1,700 master's degrees.
'If I could return to 2021, I would repeat these years of work for and with this institution again because I believe in the UPV. I believe in my university. I believe in our university, 'said Ribes after calling for the streamlining of existing bureaucratic processes and before concluding with a generalised thanks to the rest of the directors, a recognition of the work of the academic staff and students, and a message rooted in his beloved Alcoi: "Avant, sempre, Avant!'
Speaking on behalf of the heads of the university research institutes was Ramón Manuel Blasco, Director of the Research Institute for Industrial Control Systems and Computing, who first expressed his gratitude on behalf of all those elected 'for the trust placed in us by the researchers who are members of our institutes to continue the work carried out so brilliantly by our outgoing colleagues, to whom I would like to pay tribute'.
Manuel, who went on to highlight the excellence in teaching and research that has led the UPV to be recognised as the best technological university in Spain, called for work to be based on three pillars: stability, recognition and long-term vision, fundamentally to encourage the recruitment of young talent: 'We have 1,400 young researchers among our own research structures, departments and university research institutes, 1,400 people with great enthusiasm and dedication whom we must continue to care for, recognise and empower'.
Representing the university's own research structures was Jorge Curiel Esparza, coordinator of UPV's research centres and institutes, which bring together around 900 researchers in different fields of knowledge.
Curiel, who emphasised the benefits of interdisciplinary collaboration and internationalisation, pointed out that 'in 2023, our university exceeded the barrier of 100 million euros per year in income from its research, innovation and technology transfer activities. And what's more, in the last year, the UPV has positioned itself as the university with the most patents in Spain, only surpassed by the Higher Centre for Scientific Research (CSIC), according to the latest report from the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (OEPM).
