Fabiola Colmenero Fonseca, a researcher at the Research Institute for Materials Technology (IUTM) at the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), has been awarded the Sara H. Topelson Frydman Prize.
The prestigious award, granted by the Federation of Colleges of Architects of the Mexican Republic (FCARM), recognises Colmenero's architectural excellence, as well as her commitment to sustainability, innovation and gender equality in the field.
The award ceremony took place in the emblematic Palacio de Minería in Mexico City, where Colmenero received the distinction.
The creation of resilient and sustainable communities, with projects addressing issues of energy poverty and urban development, has been the focus of Dr Colmenero's work for years, whose collaboration with institutions in Mexico, Spain, and other countries in Europe and Latin America has led to architectural solutions that combine technological innovation, social impact and respect for the environment.
Among her contributions, the development of sustainable construction materials is also noteworthy.
Since 2022, Fabiola Colmenero has been part of the IUTM at UPV. This institution has been a fundamental pillar of her professional career in recent years.
During her time on the María Zambrano Programme for Attracting International Talent, she worked under the direction of Full Professor Javier Cárcel Carrasco and is currently collaborating with Dr Amparo Borrell within the framework of the CNS2023-144190 project of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. Both collaborations have allowed her to develop projects that transcend borders while integrating ethical practices in the field of sustainability.
From the IUTM-UPV, Colmenero continues to work on innovative projects whose sustainable approach reflects her determination to positively impact communities, promoting solutions that benefit both the environment and society as a whole. Meanwhile, in Mexico, her leadership in initiatives focused on combating energy poverty, including public policies on environmental education in the Youth Parliament of the Mexican Senate, reflects her commitment to equity and sustainable development.
The award received by Dr Colmenero is named after the Mexican architect, academic and civil servant Sara H. Topelson Frydman (Poland, 1947). An expert in architecture, urban planning, heritage conservation, design, teaching and union politics, among Topelson's main recognitions are the 2021 National Architecture Award and the 2022 Lorenzo H. Zambrano Award from CEMEX.
