O-CEI Project

The Universitat Politècnica de València leads a European project to optimise energy consumption with edge/cloud infrastructures

[ 17/02/2025 ]

The Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) is leading a European project aimed at promoting energy flexibility and the balance between demand and consumption based on more sustainable and efficient edge/cloud infrastructures, thus reducing carbon emissions. The project, called O-CEI, is funded by the Horizon Europe Innovation Action programme and is one of only two large-scale projects funded in this call, demonstrating its strategic importance for the sustainable digital transition in Europe.

The growth of digital infrastructures opens the door to optimising energy consumption, costs and carbon emissions in various sectors. However, the fragmentation of cloud ecosystems increasingly complicates the management of resources in connected devices, such as electric vehicles, IoT sensors and smart devices, which the O-CEI project focuses on.

'With this project, we want to find solutions to this fragmentation, to optimise energy consumption and improve the efficiency of the equipment,' says UPV full professor and project coordinator Carlos Palau.

An open platform for a greener future

The O-CEI project will launch an open CEI (Cloud-Edge-IoT) platform based on data collected in six strategic sectors: electricity networks, electromobility, software-defined vehicles, agriculture, logistics and urban environments.

‘Thanks to this platform, the project will allow, for example, a “smarter” charging of electric vehicles, more sustainable production in the dairy sector or improved energy management in seaports’, highlight Alejandro Fornés and Andreu Belsa, UPV researchers involved in the project.

A total of 57 partners from 20 countries are participating in the O-CEI project, all coordinated by the Universitat Politècnica de València. The project includes internationally renowned companies from the industrial sector, research organisations, academic institutions, SMEs and non-profit organisations.

‘O-CEI promotes a more sustainable and resilient digital infrastructure. But it's not just about technology, it's about building a greener, more sustainable future for the next generations,’ concludes Carlos Palau.
