Carlos Roldán Blay and Carlos Roldán Porta, PhD researchers at the Research Institute for Energy Engineering (IUIIE) belonging to the INIELECTRIC Group of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), are the inventors of the registered patent ES2841875B2, a device that seeks to improve the quality of life of people with brachial plexus injuries with affected radial and/or ulnar nerves, which hinder or prevent them from opening their hand.
The orthosis, designed through the ORACULO Project to help people recover the functionality of their hand by facilitating everyday tasks such as holding and releasing objects, stands out for being accessible, economical and functional, providing personalised and sustainable solutions.
The device, which uses 3D printing for its manufacture, aims, in the words of its creators, ‘to take advantage of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to adapt to the specific needs of each user, moving towards a complete development that will allow the final introduction of the device on the market’.
The ORACULO project, which has a budget of 132,943.79 euros, is subsidised by the European Union and Ivace+i Innovación, thanks to grants from the Valencian Innovation Agency (AVI) awarded under the ‘Valorisation and transfer of research results to companies’ programme.
To try to ensure the success of the project whose completion, estimated for 2026, is expected to have a functional orthosis validated in real environments, an optimised and scalable manufacturing process and a marketing strategy aimed at companies interested in innovative medical devices the research group will collaborate with various entities of great relevance in the biomechanics and health sector, such as the Institute of Biomechanics of Valencia (IBV), the Institute of Health Research La Fe (IIS La Fe) and the FISABIO Foundation.
