New Corresponding Academic Member

Alfred Peris, professor and researcher at the UPV, joins the Royal Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences of Spain (RAC)

[ 05/12/2024 ]

Alfred Peris Manguillot, professor and researcher at the Universitat Politècnica de València, has been appointed the new Corresponding Academic of the Royal Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences of Spain. An expert in Mathematical Analysis and Linear Dynamics, Peris joins the proposal of the academics Manuel López Pellicer, Fernando Bombal and José Bonet. He enters the Mathematical Sciences section.

'Without a doubt, the support I have always enjoyed at the Universitat Politècnica de València, including that of my team and collaborators, has been essential in obtaining this achievement, which for me is the collective of my group and the UPV', emphasises Alfred Peris.

Born in Cullera (Valencia) in 1966, Alfred Peris holds a PhD in Mathematical Sciences from the Universitat de València. He is currently in the top 1% of most cited researchers in his area in the last 10 years.

Peris carries out his scientific activity at the Research Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IUMPA) of the UPV and teaches at the School of Architecture, the School of Telecommunications Engineering and the Doctoral School of the UPV.

Recognition and work

For Alfred Peris, it is a great honour to belong to such a prestigious, century-old institution to which such illustrious members as Santiago Ramón y Cajal have belonged. At the same time, it is a great challenge to contribute to its aims, which include promoting the study, research and social dissemination of the Mathematical Sciences.

As a new member of the RAC, Alfred will work in those areas where, within the statutory functions, he can contribute more efficiently. These include issuing statements, reports and opinions within its scope; carrying out studies and advising the bodies that request it (the Government on matters within its competence, particularly those of scientific and academic policy); organising meetings, colloquiums or seminars; developing programmes for the dissemination of scientific culture and the popularisation of science, etc.

The first task assigned to it is as a member of the Scientific Committee of the Revista de la Real Academia de Ciencias Exactas, Físicas y Naturales. Serie A. Matemáticas (RACSAM), to carry out the editorial tasks that correspond to it.

A time for mathematics

For the UPV professor and researcher, mathematics is currently experiencing a time of great change. Artificial intelligence is having an impact on all scientific fields, particularly in mathematics.

There are many challenges ahead; perhaps among the most significant are contributing to a more traceable, explainable, and transparent AI and developing AI models that can facilitate further progress and exploration of new areas in mathematics. On this subject, José Bonet gave a magnificent inaugural lecture for the RAC academic year, entitled ‘Mathematical Demonstrations and the Computer’, last September.

And for students of all levels, he has a clear message: mathematics is exciting. It is a universal language continuously developing and has a fascinating future. Research in Mathematics is very creative, which is something it shares with the Fine Arts, and in turn, allows its application to real problems; it can contribute to the improvement of our society, and if you like it, you can enjoy it all your life and admire its beauty, like a work of art.
