The history of the Universitat Politècnica de València's Gandia campus can be traced back based on its three decades figures: seven thousand people have obtained a university degree; its scientific community has received research contracts worth more than 38 million euros, and each year, the campus has contributed around 37 million euros to its surroundings.
But not only by figures, the Gandia campus is and has been much more: a shared project, an experience that transforms lives and a commitment to knowledge and culture, as expressed by the different personalities who took part in the closing ceremony of the 30th anniversary of the campus, which was held on Friday 18 October in the Aula Magna of the university campus.
The meeting was hosted by alumna Cristina Boscá, presenter and director at LOS40. It included screening a short film about the campus coordinated by its alumni Abdón Alcañiz, art director of "La casa de Papel", among other works.
During the ceremony, a tribute was paid to key figures in the birth of the university campus, such as Justo Nieto, former Rector of the UPV; Pepa Frau, former mayoress of Gandia; and José Pedro García Canet, who played a crucial role in the citizens' movement that promoted the creation of the campus.
Both Justo Nieto and Pepa Frau emphasised that the project was possible thanks to a joint initiative that linked the Gandia City Council, the Universitat Politècnica de València and the society to ensure that the city recovered the university character it had had from 1547 to 1772.
Juan Julià, former Rector of the UPV; Juan José Moragues, Manela Fernández and Pepe Pastor, former directors of the School, as well as the current director, Jesús Alba, who stated his satisfaction that the campus is currently "at the forefront of education and research", is "supportive, innovative and inclusive" and "reinvents itself daily to adapt to what society demands of it".
In addition, awards were presented to the members of staff who have worked in the institution since its foundation 30 years ago.
The event was attended by relevant personalities for the present of the campus: Diana Morant, Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities; Esther Gómez, Regional Secretary for Universities; and José Manuel Prieto, Mayor of Gandia.
In his speech, José Manuel Prieto reiterated the city's support for the campus and highlighted the Gandia Arena university pavilion project, which, with an initial investment of 8.5 million euros, "will enable sports activities and large-scale meetings to be held".
Esther Gómez, regional secretary for universities, underlined the will of the Generalitat Valenciana to continue building on knowledge, innovation and sustainability and highlighted initiatives such as the Manuela Solís scholarships, which will complement other grants aimed at students on very low incomes.
Diana Morant highlighted the value of the public university as a means of access to opportunities for all people and as a natural "social lift". She recalled that in 2025, Gandia would have a research centre of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) in its harbour, which was only possible with the collaboration of the research staff of the UPV Gandia campus with the IEO.
The data show that universities are "central to social and economic development", as highlighted by the Rector of the UPV, Prof. Dr José E. Capilla, during the 30th anniversary Campus Ceremony.
"Universities play a vital role in both local and global contexts. The UPV exemplifies this commitment by focusing on cultivating talent, attracting skilled individuals, fostering economic growth, and, as a public institution, ensuring that the returns on society's investment are maximised", continued the UPV's highest representative.
Capilla reviewed the challenges on the near horizon for universities and insisted on the need to continue adapting. He was optimistic: "The Gandia campus is ready to continue growing, innovating and offering our students a future full of possibilities", he concluded.
