The Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) is the leading university in Spain in terms of patents filed and the second in the whole country, only behind the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), according to the latest annual report of the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office ?La OEPM en cifras 2023?.
In 2023, the Universitat Politècnica de València applied for a total of 31 patents, significantly improving the figures obtained in 2022, when it applied for 24 patents.
"These figures not only show our continued commitment to R&D&I but also consolidate our leading position in the university and scientific field in Spain. The fact that UPV applied for 31 patents in 2023, considerably increasing our figures from the previous year, is a clear indicator of the quality and impact of our work. Being the first university and second in the country only behind the CSIC is testimony to our excellence in R+D+I and motivates us to continue advancing and overcoming new challenges," says Salvador Coll, Vice-Rector for Innovation and Transfer of the UPV.
Among the patents filed by the UPV, seven are in the Energy sector - including both energy production and efficiency; six in Food and six in Chemistry; five are related to the area of Health; three in Construction, two in Industry; one in the ICT sector and one in the Environment.
And by research structures, the Research Institute for Chemical Technology (ITQ, UPV-CSIC) stands out in first place, with six patents applied for, followed by the Interuniversity Research Institute for Molecular Recognition and Technological Development (IDM), with five; the Research Institute for Energy Engineering (IIE), with four; and the Research Institute for Food Engineering-(FoodUPV), which presented three.
The Research Institute for Automatics and Industrial Informatics (ai2 Institute), the Research Institute for Nanophotonics Technology (NTC), the Research Institute for Concrete Science and Technology (ICITECH) and the Textile and Paper Engineering Department (DITEXPA) at the Alcoy campus each submitted two.
The Research Institute for Molecular Imaging Technologies (I3M, UPV-CSIC), the Research Institute for Telecommunications and Multimedia Applications (iTEAM), the Communications Department, the University Research Institute for Materials Technology (IUTM) and the Rural and Agrifood Engineering Department complete the total number of patents applied for by the UPV in 2023, with one each.
'Being at the top of this report is of utmost importance because it provides recognition and prestige, which attracts more talent and resources, as well as innovation and competitiveness because patents are a key indicator of innovative capacity. This allows us to constantly generate new ideas and technology that can impact society and the economy. In addition, this leadership stimulates knowledge transfer, attracts investment and fosters research and innovation at our university. In short, it drives growth and development in multiple dimensions, benefiting the university, the scientific community and society in general,' concludes Salvador Coll.
By Communities, the Valencian Community is in second place (16.6% of the total number of applications submitted), behind the Community of Madrid (24.7%) and ahead of Andalusia (14.9%) and Catalonia (13.4%). These four communities account for 69.6% of all applications submitted by residents.
