The Research Institute for Nanophotonics Technology of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) will receive an investment of 6.1 million euros from PERTE Chip, the Strategic Project for the Recovery and Economic Transformation of Microelectronics and Semiconductors of the Spanish Government.
This project is endowed with 10,000 million euros. The Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities manages 360 million euros of the total.
Chips, essential
Minister Diana Morant announced the new investment after the clean room visit of the Research Institute for Nanophotonics Technology of the UPV. This unique facility is part of the Network of Micro and Nanomanufacturing Clean Rooms, along with those of the Technological University of Madrid and the CSIC in Barcelona.
These scientific infrastructures are essential for the research and production of chips, vital components for electronic devices. The PERTE Chip will allocate 11.3 million euros in funding to the clean room network.
In 2023, The Research Institute for Nanophotonics Technology of the UPV already received an investment of 2.05 million euros, which, added to the new endowment, means an endowment of 8,150 million euros.
Technological sovereignty
The collapse of supply chains caused by the pandemic highlighted the danger posed to Europe by excessive dependence on other countries to manufacture key products.
Currently, the semiconductor market for chip manufacturing is dominated by Taiwan and South Korea. With PERTE Chip, Spain seeks to increase its autonomy and leadership in this strategic industry.
Morant stressed that the investment will improve the technological capabilities of the clean room of UPV and Spain and Europe's position in the global chip manufacturing race.
"Chip production is vital for our country's competitiveness and technological sovereignty," said Morant.
