Holograma Fallero: El Arte del Moño (The art of the bun)

The Institute of Telecommunications and Mobile Applications (iTEAM) of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) and Telefónica are proud to present an innovative use case of holographic capture applied to training. This project is the result of a strong collaboration within a national project in which Telefónica and UPV have recently launched an immersive communications laboratory at the university. This initiative, presented last December, pioneers the development of experiences using holographic technology based on 5G communications, including the 26 GHz millimetre band.

The first use case developed in this laboratory between Telefónica and UPV is 'Holograma Fallero': El Arte del Moño'. It offers a unique virtual reality (VR) experience where users, equipped with VR glasses, can follow a tutorial guided by experts in Valencian hairdressing. This innovative experience provides a detailed view of the process of the Fallera hairstyle, allowing users to follow it remotely and with the support of tutors in a completely innovative way.

As part of this project, Telefónica has deployed at the UPV a volumetric video capture set composed of 13 Intel Realsense D455 cameras and a software solution from the American company Evercoast. These tools allow synchronised capture and video processing to generate high-quality 3D content in real-time.

Telefónica is also working on optimising the private 5G network at UPV. This network will provide the necessary real-time volumetric video streaming performance, enabling more use cases for different training sessions.

The consumption of volumetric video represents a new way of interacting with content, allowing users to view it from any angle as if they were physically present. This type of content, mainly when used with Virtual Reality glasses, as in the case of the 'Holograma Fallero', offers a uniquely immersive experience. However, the consumption of volumetric video also poses a significant technical challenge due to its high weight per second and real-time processing requirements, putting both the hardware and the network to the test and highlighting the need for further technological advances.

This is the first training where holography is applied, a first step where further research developments and new use cases will be carried out.

The implementation of the laboratory and this initiative are part of the "Avanzando-5G-Inmersivo" and "Avanzando-5G-Gemelos Digitales" projects of the UNICO I+D 5G plan, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Digital Transformation and the Civil Service with NextGenEU funds from the European Commission.
