Since 26 April, the Universitat Politècnica de València has had a permanent blood and plasma donation centre, the first in Spain to be located in a university setting. It is also a Bone Marrow Donor Registry.
The new centre will serve the university community and the neighbourhood. It is located on the first floor of the Juana Portaceli Health Centre (Building 6E) on the Vera Campus. It will be open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 AM to 7 PM during the academic year.
The Regional Health Minister, Marciano Gómez, along with the Rector of the UPV, José Esteban Capilla, and the Director of the Valencian Community Transfusion Centre (CTCV), Cristina Arbona, have visited the permanent blood and plasma donation room.
The efforts of both the UPV and the CTCV to highlight the value of the generosity and commitment involved in donating blood and the need to provide a closer service have made it possible to create this permanent meeting point for donors.
The Transfusion Centre underlines "the social responsibility and commitment shown by the Rectorate of the UPV, its Vice-Rectorate, the Occupational Risk Prevention Management Unit and the essential Student Recreation Centre".
The donating requirements are simple: you must be over 18 years old, in good health and weigh over 50 kilos. Women can donate up to 3 times a year and men up to 4 times a year, as long as two months have elapsed between each donation.
The first donation campaign at the UPV took place in 2001 at the School of Rural Environment and Oenology. So far, collections have been successfully held in all schools and faculties. During this time, almost 37,000 units of blood have been collected, and more than 10,000 new people have joined the large family of donors.
