Chargers for electric vehicles

The UPV deploys a network of twelve charging points for electric vehicles on its three campuses

[ 30/01/2024 ]

The Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) has partially installed twelve charging points for electric vehicles on its three campuses (Vera, Gandia and Alcoi), which will be available exclusively to the entire university community. Eight of them, located on the Vera campus, are expected to be operational from 30 January. The remaining four will soon be installed in Gandia and Alcoi.

These are six devices with a dual charging system, i.e. they will be able to supply energy to two vehicles at the same time and will be located in the following car parks:

- Nexus Building, 6G (Vera Campus)

- Ciudad Politécnica de la Innovación - CPI, 8B (Vera Campus)

- Rectorado, 1B (Vera Campus)

- School of Agricultural Engineering and Environment (ETSIAMN), 3A (Vera Campus)

- CRAI Building, H (Gandia Campus)

- Georgina Blanes Building (Alcoi Campus)

In this way, any member of the University community who uses an electric vehicle (cars and vans) can use this service by using the Umbrella emobility app (available in Play Store and APP Store) and benefit from significant discounts on their rates (0.33€/kW). In addition, after downloading and registering in this app, UPV users can access other chargers in the rest of Spain for €0.45/kW.

Full charge in 4 hours

The models installed are type 2, which means they have an average charging speed (22 kW) that allows any vehicle to be fully charged in 4 or 5 hours, depending on its characteristics.

To publicise the operation and advantages of this new service, the Environmental Unit (UMA) will launch an information campaign aimed at the entire university community starting 1 February.

Similarly, in order to cover as many users as possible and take advantage of the opportunity cost of use, a warning system will be implemented through the Umbrella emobility app, which will inform the driver of the full extent of the charge. The aim is to prevent a vehicle from being used for more than 90 minutes after its maximum capacity has been reached.

UPV sponsorship project

This initiative is part of the Net Zero line of the UPV Sponsorship Project, whose aim is to make the UPV carbon neutral and a benchmark university in terms of sustainability, thanks to the contribution of different sponsors.

In this case, the cost of five of these six double chargers for electric vehicles has been entirely covered by Power Electronics. This Valencian company is a world leader in energy storage and the first manufacturer of solar inverters for photovoltaic plants.
