International benchmarks UPV

Avelino Corma, Amparo Chiralt, Hermenegildo García and Luis Guanter are among the international scientific elite.

[ 17/01/2024 ]

Avelino Corma, Amparo Chiralt, Hermenegildo García and Luis Guanter are four of the leading science references with the UPV seal. And all four are once again part of the international scientific elite. For yet another year, Corma, Chiralt, García and Guanter are among the most influential researchers worldwide in their respective areas of knowledge. This is reflected in the 2023 Highly Cited Researchers (HCR) list, which recognises the most internationally cited scientists.

Avelino Corma, a distinguished researcher at the Universitat Politècnica de València, and Hermenegildo García, a professor at the same university - both researchers at the Institute of Chemical Technology (ITQ, UPV-CSIC) - are once again two of the most influential researchers in the world in the field of chemistry. Amparo Chiralt, a professor and researcher at the Institute of Food Engineering for Development (IUIAD-UPV), is an international reference in the field of agricultural sciences. Luis Guanter, a professor and researcher at the Institute of Water Engineering and Environment (IIAMA), stands out in Earth Sciences (or Geosciences).

In its latest edition, the HCR list includes 7,125 researchers who stand out for their exceptional contributions to scientific knowledge and influence in their respective areas of expertise. Of these, 100 carry out their scientific work in Spanish institutions (in their first assignment).

The methodology determining the "who's who" of the most influential researchers worldwide is based on the data and analysis carried out by bibliometric experts and data scientists at Clarivate's Institute for Scientific Information™. Their study evaluated scientific articles among the top 1% most cited by field and year in Clarivate Analytics' Web of Science, specifically articles published between 2012 and 2022.

At first-hand: a wish for Spanish science?

Avelino Corma: More resources should be allocated to basic research since it is the guarantee for the future.

Amparo Chiralt: My wish for 2024 and the future is to increase investment in science and build a better world. We have many challenges to tackle, and to do so, progress in knowledge and adequate policies for its implementation are fundamental.

Hermenegildo García: To take advantage of the opportunity the change in the energy model offers to develop science and technology in Spain.

Luis Guanter: To support the adoption of measures to defend the climate and the environment as much as possible.
