The commitment from the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) in innovation is unquestionable. A good example of this is that, as of today, it is the university with the largest number of professors in the world, 421, using reversed teaching (flipped classroom), a teaching method that modifies the roles of professors and students in and out of the classroom.
In this way, the lecture aspect of the class is studied at home, where the student learns the material with videos and other multimedia materials, and the time in the classroom is spent on activities, group projects and other more collaborative dynamics.
Methodology began at the UPV in 2014
According to a report presented last April during the first session of the Government Council of the UPV, the main reason that leads the teacher to invert the methodology is the interest in improvement and innovation. Other reasons include the lack of student participation in class (25%) or the inability to teach all of the material (8%).
Perhaps it is for these reasons that, during the last school year, 256 classes and 270 professors joined the Flipped Classroom project, a method that began at the UPV in 2014 as a pilot program and has grown from 19 to 357 classes and from 28 to 421 teachers now.
As Virginia Vega, the vice rector in Digital Resources and Documentation states, "Flipped Classroom UPV is an established project in our university. The numbers support this initiative, which already includes 9,000 students. In addition, on the global scale, we are the university with the most professors teaching this methodology. That's why it's time to put the focus on the quality of the implantation".
87% of the faculty surveyed, in favor
As seen in detail in the report that was presented, 87% of the faculty surveyed considers this methodology positive for the student. 55% of the student body is also satisfied with it, despite requiring a more active role on their behalf to obtain results.
For Vega, "the majority of the professors that have opted to be a part of this methodology have done so as a way of innovating their teaching, a positive point for our teachers that want to continue to innovate in the classroom".
