Dones de Cičncia, awarded a Búho Prize at Educafestival

The UPV project has been recognized in the category of Innovation and Transformative Ideas for Educational Centers

The Universitat Politčcnica de Valčncia (UPV) has been awarded, for the second consecutive year, a Búho Prize at the International Educational Advertising Festival, Educafestival. Its project Dones de Cičncia has been distinguished in the category of Innovation and Transformative Ideas for Educational Centers.

This new recognition reinforces the UPV Communication Area’s commitment to innovation in its strategies and formats for scientific dissemination. Last year, the UPV was awarded for the student recruitment campaign Conocimiento e ingenio; this year, the prize goes to a project that, since 2019, has been filling Valencian educational centers with female-led science and art, showcasing spectacular murals of outstanding women who are national and international references in science.

The award ceremony took place yesterday, December 1st, at Caixaforum Madrid, and was attended by Marga Cabrera, director of the UPV Communication Area, and Luis Zurano, head of scientific communication and outreach at the UPV.

“Receiving a Búho Prize for the second year in a row is a tremendous satisfaction, a recognition of our work and innovation not only in what we communicate but in how we communicate it. This award is a great incentive for everyone in the Communication Area in general, and for the Dones de Cičncia project in particular. We will continue exploring new ways of communicating from within the university, promoting creativity while maintaining rigor and social commitment,” highlights Marga Cabrera.

50 murals

Since its inception, Dones de Cičncia has brought together three languages that rarely dialogue with one another: urban art, scientific outreach, and education. And it has done so with a clear purpose: to show new generations that science also has a woman’s face.

The project, promoted by the UPV and Valencia Innovation Capital, is transforming educational centers into vibrant spaces for learning and inspiration. It began in 2019 with a simple yet powerful idea: education needs visible female scientific role models in order to build a fairer and more diverse society.

“In a time when information multiplies but female scientific references can still be counted on one hand, Dones de Cičncia was born to fill the walls —and the minds— of thousands of girls and boys with color and role models,” says Luis Zurano.

From February 8th, 2019—when Margarita Salas inaugurated the mural paying tribute to her on the façade of the UPV rectorate—until today, 46 murals have come to life as part of the project. And this academic year the number will reach 50, with new murals at educational centers in Meliana, Catarroja, Silla, Picanya and Picassent. Once again, the project will receive support from the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, which has supported this initiative since its inception.

The most important educational communication awards in Spain

This year's awards carried the slogan “Ideas that awaken ideas.” With it, Educafestival sought to create a space where brands, agencies, and educational actors could present their best purpose-driven communication campaigns, generating dialogues that inspire and motivate people to act with awareness and responsibility. Dones de Cičncia has been selected as one of the best initiatives of this sixth edition of the festival.
