The Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) is one of the 100 best universities in the world in Agriculture and Forestry, according to the latest edition of the prestigious QS World University Rankings by Subject -regarded, together with the Shanghai (ARWU) and the THE (Times Higher Education) rankings, as one of the three main indicators worldwide-, which was published on Wednesday.
Furthermore, the UPV is among the world's 350 best universities in 10 of the 36 disciplines that have been analyzed: Chemical Engineering; Civil Engineering; Statistics and Operational Research; Telecommunications and Electronic Engineering; Mathematics; Environmental Science; Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering; Computer Science; and Physics and Astronomy, apart from the aforementioned Agriculture and Forestry.
"These are brilliant results, and have been achieved with much less investment than other countries with which we compete"
The rector of the UPV, Francisco Mora, wanted to "congratulate the entire UPV community, as, there being more than 20,000 universities in the world, these are brilliant results -and they have been achieved with far fewer resources than other universities have at their disposal, since Spain invests in research projects much less than other countries with which we compete."
Mora strongly believes that "our leaders must be made aware of the need to invest in this area. These results once again show that Spain is a scientific power with very good research centres, but there have been a lot of budget cuts and now the situation, in terms of human resources for example, is very difficult. And in this way, it becomes also difficult for Spain to keep pace with other countries. We're managing to do so, but only by making an effort that will not be sustainable for a long time."
Among the top 150 in Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Statistics and Operational Research
In particular, the UPV's ranking in Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Statistics and Operations Research, where it is among the world's 150 best universities, must be highlighted.
As regards Telecommunications and Electronic Engineering, the QS Rankings by Subject place the UPV among the top 200 universities worldwide, and among the top 250 in 3 disciplines: Mathematics; Environmental Science; and Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering.
In addition, after classifying 894 higher education institutions out of the 3551 that have been analyzed in this edition, this prestigious ranking also places the UPV in a privileged position both in Computer Science (251-300) and in Physics and Astronomy (301-350).
Methodology
The ranking, developed by the British Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) company, evaluates the work of universities in the following major areas of knowledge: Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, and Business and Management.
In order to prepare this ranking, QS analyzes several parameters related to a university's scientific production, its prestige -both in the academic and the business worlds-, its international presence and its commitment to education.
