The UPV (DOES NOT) leave a footprint

Committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030, the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) is holding the Environment Week from 10 to 14 November

[ 07/11/2025 ]

More frequent and intense extreme weather events, irreversible loss of coastal ecosystems, accelerated melting of glaciers and the Arctic, increased food insecurity due to the impact on agriculture, and the disappearance of coral reefs, which are key to our current ecosystem... The severe consequences of global warming are already a reality, and it is up to us to mitigate its impact.

That is why raising awareness of the global need for a firm and widespread commitment to the environment is essential for the future of humanity.

At part of the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris, the European Union committed to moving towards carbon neutrality - a state in which the carbon dioxide emissions released into the atmosphere are offset by the amount removed from it - in the second half of the 21st century, as well as to limiting global warming to an increase of 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels (1850-1900), a threshold that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) considers safe.

Triple objective

In this context, the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) is celebrating Environment Week from 10 November to 14, 2025. It is doing so with a triple objective: to calculate the UPV's carbon footprint, to reduce and offset it, and to carry out effective dissemination and awareness-raising activities on its impact.

To this end, the UPV Environmental Unit has launched a specific website for Environment Week 2025, where, in addition to finding all the information about the event, you can calculate your carbon footprint and learn about all the actions taken by the Universitat Politècnica de València to improve the environmental performance of its current Environmental Plan to the UPV's sustainable goal in the UPV SIRVE Strategic Plan (2023-2027), which establishes the UPV's commitment to achieving carbon neutrality on its three campuses by 2030.

83% reduction in carbon footprint since 2014

In this regard, it is worth highlighting that the UPV has achieved an 83% reduction in its carbon footprint in scopes 1 (direct emissions) and 2 (indirect emissions from purchased energy), and has developed a pioneering methodology for calculating the scope 3 (indirect emissions produced throughout its value chain) of its carbon footprint.

Complete the UPV survey and receive your gift.

To continue advancing towards its goals, the UMA will place special emphasis on awareness, dissemination, and communication during this edition. It is, therefore, asking the university community to help in a very simple way: Complete the survey on the home page of Environment Week 2025 and receive a gift at any of the three UPV campuses.

Help us fight climate change. Give us a hand to NOT leave a footprint.
