Minute of silence

The university community shows its support for the victims of the dana one year after the worst natural disaster in Valencia

[ 29/10/2025 ]

Silence. The university community has expressed its support for the 229 victims who lost their lives in the dana that devastated l'Horta Sud on 29 October 2024, with a minute of silence held across the three campuses of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV). (Video)

Minutes before the ceremony, the rector of the UPV, José Capilla, recalled that, in the face of the worst natural disaster ever experienced in Valencia, 'we are not free from this happening again. Hopefully, we have learned all the lessons we need to learn so that this does not happen once more'.

Gratitude

The rector thanked those present for paying tribute to 'those who lost their lives and in solidarity with so many people who are still struggling to rebuild their businesses and their lives'. He also expressed his gratitude to the entire university community for the voluntary and selfless help they offered at the time and for their continued contributions 'providing expert knowledge' on issues related to reconstruction and the prevention of future disasters.

Capilla also pointed out that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has warned that there will be many more danas and that climate change 'will increase the intensity and frequency of this type of phenomenon. Therefore, we must be prepared to face them'.
