Frequently asked questions

University entrance examinations (PAU)

When paying the PAU fees, is good for the two calls (ordinary and extraordinary)?
The PAU fees are paid for each of the calls. The amount of the fees is a single payment of 78.20 euros, regardless of the number of exams you take (only compulsory phase, compulsory and voluntary phase or only voluntary phase).

Is there any kind of discount when paying the PAU fees?
For the payment of PAU fees you have the following exemptions and bonuses. Students will be exempt from paying the PAU fees, if they fall in any of these categories: disability, large family of special category, single-parent family of special category, victim of gender violence, victim of terrorism, situation of social exclusion, child protection system, judicial reeducation system, honours degree in second year of baccalaureate or extraordinary baccalaureate award.

Students will be exempt from paying 50% of the PAU fees, if they find themselves in any of these situations: large family of general category or single-parent family of general category.

Does the general core subject linked to the baccalaureate modality (Mathematics II, Mathematics Applied to Social Sciences II, Latin II or Foundations of Art II) of the compulsory phase score twice? And the foreign language subject?
Yes, the weight of this subject is used twice to calculate the average of 5 of the compulsory phase and also for weighting purposes, together with the other 4 (maximum) of the voluntary phase that are used for weighting. The same applies to the foreign language of the compulsory phase.

If I do not attend the voluntary phase, will the general modality core subject of the compulsory phase also weigh? And the foreign language subject?
Yes. If a student does not take any subject in the voluntary phase, they may have a maximum of 14 points for admission to the university, in some degrees, because the general core subject taken related to the modality (Mathematics II, Mathematics Applied to Sciences Social II, Latin II or Fundamentals of Art II) is automatically weighted (in those degrees in which it weighs), the same as the foreign language of the compulsory phase. It must be borne in mind that the general core subject linked to modality always scores 0.2, in those branches in which it weighs.

If I attend the voluntary phase, will the subject of the compulsory phase also weight?
Yes. A student can have a maximum of 6 subjects that weight, the 4 of the voluntary phase, the general core of the compulsory phase modality and the foreign language of the compulsory phase. The computer system will collect, for each university degree, the marks of the 2 (of these 6 subjects) for which the student has the best admission mark.

If I am a foreign student, that is, I study in a university in the Valencian Community but with a foreign educational system, or I come directly from another country, can I access Valencian universities?
Yes. It is necessary to differentiate if the country of the studies has an access agreement with Spain or not. The conditions for access will be determined by the UNED. If the student has to take the PAU exams to access our universities, these tests must be taken at the UNED, the so called PCE tests. The UNED will issue a credential and will manage the tests, with which students can access our university pre-registration procedure. Students can check the document on the access and admission of foreign students.

How are the UNED exams for foreign students?
The examinations of the PCE of the UNED can be consulted on the UNEDasiss website. UNED website:  UNED website:  (open in a new windows)

Can I be exempt from the Valencian language exam in the PAU?
Students who have a positive Valencian exemption resolution in the PAU are exempt from performing the "Valencian: Language and Literature II" exercise of the university entrance exam. Educational centres may only grant the Valencian exemption in the PAU if the students fall under one of these two situations:
a) Having obtained a positive an exemption from Valencian in 4th year of secondary education or 1st or 2nd year of baccalaureate.
b) Having obtained an exemption from Valencian in the PAU by the General Directorate of Educational Policy.

Pre-registration for national students

Where does pre-registration take place?
Online, through an assistant of the Valencian Government:www.preinscripcion.gva.es  www.preinscripcion.gva.es  (open in a new windows)

How do I get the password?
To access the portal you must log in with the username and password that will be provided on the first day of the PAU exams on the identification label sheet.

Can I start the procedures, even if I don't have all the documentation yet?
Yes, when you start the procedures a file is created where you provide the documentation they ask for. Students can complete it in several sessions as they obtain the data they request.

Do I need the original documents in the pre-registration?
No, you can scan and upload them as you obtain them. They will ask you for the physical presentation of some original documents such as the degree certificate, but that will be when you are already studying at the UPV. Students can hand them in until December.

How will I know where I have been admitted?
The document that certifies that you have passed the PAU exams is obtained through the Student Portal Student Portal (open in a new windows) If you have been admitted to a degree at the UPV, we will send you a message to your mobile phone number with the specific day and time to register online.

Where can I check the weightings of the subjects for each degree?
On the UPV Student Service website:http://www.upv.es/entidades/SA/acceso/719586normalc.html http://www.upv.es/entidades/SA/acceso/719586normalc.html (open in a new windows)

How do you weight the subjects of the double grades, if there are different scores in each degree?
The subject with the highest score is weighted, always to benefit the students.

Pre-registration for academic overseas students

Pre-registration from the Spanish educational system outside of Spain
The same steps as those students who are already studying in Spain are followed. At the end of the 2nd year of baccalaureate, students take the University Entrance Examinations (PAU) to obtain the admission mark to university. Pre-registration is carried out online, through an assistant from the Valencian Government: www.preinscripcion.gva.es www.preinscripcion.gva.es (open in a new windows)

Pre-registration from other educational systems
To access the UPV, students must complete two previous procedures. On the one hand, the accreditation, which is carried out on the UNEDasiss website and, on the other, the certification, which is carried out on the website of the Spanish Ministry of Education. For the educational systems of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) or countries with reciprocity agreements, only the accreditation is necessary. For the rest, the certification and accreditation is necessary. It is highly recommended to start the procedures with the UNED and the Ministry as soon as possible. Although the application for accreditation at the UNED is not resolved, students must complete the pre-registration on time.

What is the UNEDasiss accreditation?
The UNEDasiss Accreditation is a digital certificate that allows students to participate in the admission processes to the university in Spain and that consists of the assessment of academic records obtained in international educational systems in a homogeneous and regulated manner. This accreditation also includes the qualifications of specific competency tests (PCE) carried out at UNED, as well as other services requested by the student.

Access

What do I need to be able to access the university?
If you have studied the baccalaureate, you must pass the university entrance exams (PAU). However, you can access without the PAU if you have a degree as Advanced Vocational Training Specialist, Advanced Sports Specialist or Advanced Plastic Arts and Design Specialist and Advanced Sports Specialist. And also if you already have another university degree. And if you have completed pre-university studies in a foreign educational system, you must contact the UNED. In all cases, you have to carry out the university pre-registration to obtain a place in a degree.

What is the access to university mark? (NAU)?
This mark is calculated as the weighted average of 60% of the average baccalaureate mark and 40% of the compulsory phase. To generate the average, it is necessary that the qualification of the compulsory phase is equal to or greater than 4 points. Students will take the PAU exams when the university entrance mark (NAU) is equal to or greater than 5 points. The university entrance mark (NAU) is valid indefinitely. And the highest score is 10 points.

What is the access to university mark?
Here the weights come into play, that is, those subjects of the voluntary phase and some of the compulsory phase that weight 0.1 or 0.2 depending on the degree chosen. And the highest score is 14 points.

We have designed a mark simulator at the UPV, for information purposes and without any legal validity, so that students can calculate what their access mark and admission mark could be:
http://www.upv.es/pls/oalu/sic_simula.frmNotas?P_IDIOMA=i http://www.upv.es/pls/oalu/sic_simula.frmNotas?P_IDIOMA=i (open in a new windows)

What are the cut-off marks for degrees and where can I find them?
The cut-off marks are not set by public universities, but rather the admission mark that the last student registered for that specific degree and in that specific university has. Cut-off marks may vary from year to year, but they tend to vary little. They depend on the demand, that is, the cut-off mark is given by the students who enter the university each year, according to their admission mark.

The cut-off marks can be consulted on each of the websites of the public universities of the Valencian Community. For example, at the UPV:
http://www.upv.es/pls/oalu/sic_futuroalumno.notascorte?p_idioma=i http://www.upv.es/pls/oalu/sic_futuroalumno.notascorte?p_idioma=i (open in a new windows)

And on the website of the Valencian Government:
http://www.ceice.gva.es/va/web/universidad/preinscripcion http://www.ceice.gva.es/va/web/universidad/preinscripcion (open in a new windows)

What should I do at the end of a higher vocational training courses if I want to start undergraduate university studies?
Students can pre-register, without having to take the PAU exams. But bear in mind that you enter the same quota as baccalaureate students who take the PAU exams and their university admission mark can reach 14 points, while yours reaches a maximum of 10 points. Depending on what degree you want to study (and taking into account the cut-off mark) you can take the exams of the voluntary phase of the PAU to increase your mark. Please note this is voluntary.

If I have not obtained a place in the degree I want to study, what can I do?

- Students can apply to the voluntary phase of the PAU exams to increase their mark.

- Students can start another degree and when the period to request "continuation of studies" opens, from mid-February to early March, request the change to the degree they wanted to study. Important: 1) you must get recognized at least 30 credits in the new university studies you want to access, and 2) very few places are offered, and places are awarded based on the university academic record, that is, the mark. Students can check all the information on this topic on the Student Service website:
http://www.upv.es/entidades/SA/ciclos/528248normali.html http://www.upv.es/entidades/SA/ciclos/528248normali.html (open in a new windows)

- Students can study a higher vocational training course related to the degree they want to take.

What can I do if I want to change my university studies?
When the period to request "continuation of studies" opens, from mid-February to early March, request the change to the degree you would like to study. Important: 1) you must get recognized at least 30 credits in the new university studies you want to access, and 2) very few places are offered, and places are awarded based on the university academic record, that is, the mark. Students can check all the information on this topic on the Student Service website: http://www.upv.es/entidades/SA/ciclos/528248normali.html http://www.upv.es/entidades/SA/ciclos/528248normali.html (open in a new windows)

Who can apply for admission by continuation of studies?
Only students with partial official Spanish university studies or with foreign university studies can apply for admission by continuation of studies.

How do you transfer the file from another university to the UPV?
Students access by admission for change of studies, the corresponding fee is paid at their centre of origin and then they register at the UPV. Admission due to change of studies is compatible with general pre-registration, that is, both requests can be made.

Admission due to change of studies: a previous equivalence study is carried out with a minimum of 30 completed credits.

Admission by pre-registration: the recognition of credits takes place after registration and is requested from your centre through the intranet.

Tuition and costs

What do I have to pay when I register for a university degree?
The UPV is a public university and its prices are subsidised. The first year usually costs between 1,000 and 1,300 euros, plus secretarial and approval expenses, which are under 200 euros.

The price of registration depends on the number of credits you have registered for and on the price of the credit. The price of the credit is established annually by the Regional Ministry and varies depending on the level of experimentation to which the degree belongs. It also varies depending on whether it is a first, second, third or successive registration, that is, if you retake subjects. Students can consult the fee decree at the following link:
http://www.upv.es/entidades/SA/ciclos/528304normali.html http://www.upv.es/entidades/SA/ciclos/528304normali.html (open in a new windows)

In addition to the credits that students register for, they must pay the following fees:

- File opening, in the event that it is the first time that they register for some studies.
- Official Academic Certificate (CAO), where the qualifications of the university entrance exams (PAU) are recorded.
- Issuance/maintenance of the university card.
- School insurance (if they are under 28 years old).

What are the tuition payment methods?
The forms of payment that can be chosen to pay your tuition are:

- Payment in one instalment through your bank account
- Payment in two instalments through your bank account
- Payment in eight instalments through your bank account (8 months)
- Credit card in one instalment
- Credit card in two instalments

In the self-registration process students will indicate the preferred payment method. The first payment is not made until September.

Is there an exemption reason for paying tuition fees?
Yes. Students will be exempt from paying the registration fees, if they fall in any of these categories: disability, large family of special category, single-parent family of special category, victim of gender violence, victim of terrorism, situation of social exclusion, child protection system, judicial reeducation system, honours degree in second year of baccalaureate or extraordinary baccalaureate award.

Students will be exempt from paying 50% of the registration fees, if they find themselves in any of these situations: large family of general category or single-parent family of general category.

If I obtain an honours degree in any subject of the degree, will I be entitled to some type of fee exemption?
Yes, you will have a discount in the amount of the registration of the immediately following academic year, equivalent to the price of the same number of credits in which you have obtained the honours, as long as you register for the same studies.

Grants and subsidies

What grants and subsidies can I apply for?
There are three ways to access subsidies.

- The grant provided by the Spanish government, Ministry of Education and Valencian Government, are aimed at people who have nationality or permanent residence status.

- Grants from the UPV and other private organisations are normally awarded for merits and socioeconomic conditions, regardless of nationality.

- Finally, overseas student should find out about the aid provided by their own countries.

If I have an honours degree, is the first year of university free?
Students with honours in the global assessment of the 2nd year of baccalaureate or with an extraordinary award in baccalaureate have, during the first year and only once, a total exemption from paying tuition fees. Likewise, they are entitled to exemption from registration fees in the university entrance exams (PAU).

What do I have to do to justify the honours registration for the next year?
When students register for a degree at the UPV, the self-registration application will ask if they obtained an honours degree in baccalaureate (or extraordinary baccalaureate award). If the answer is yes, the university will take it into account so as not to manage the collection of receipts for teaching activity (administrative fees are paid).

Students must scan and upload the corresponding document in each case to the application:
- Baccalaureate honours: certificate issued by your study centre.
- Extraordinary baccalaureate award: certificate certifying the award.

Through the intranet students will be able to see when their centre validates the documentation that presented during registration (generally from September onwards). If it was incomplete or incorrect, the secretary of the centre will contact the students so that they can provide the missing documents.

Accommodation

I don't live in València, where can I stay?
There are residence halls and student residences near the three UPV campuses: Vera (València), Alcoi and Gandia. http://www.upv.es/perfiles/estudiante/alojamientos-residencias-en.html http://www.upv.es/perfiles/estudiante/alojamientos-residencias-en.html (open in a new windows)

Students can also stay in a shared flat near the campus. The UPV helps its students free of charge to find accommodation that meets their expectations and needs. To do this, it maintains a database that serves as a meeting point between students and individuals who offer rooms for rent in shared flats, accommodation with a family or flats for rent. http://www.upv.es/perfiles/estudiante/alojamientos-upv-en.html http://www.upv.es/perfiles/estudiante/alojamientos-upv-en.html (open in a new windows)
