[ 21/05/2019 ]

The Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) is among the 100 most innovative in Europe. As stated by the Reuters Top 100 ranking: Europe's Most Innovative Universities 2019 which was recently published, which identifies and arranges higher education institutions that contribute, to a greater extent, to the progress of science, the invention of new technologies and the drive of the economy.

The UPV, which stands in 95th position, is one of the five Spanish institutions included in this ranking, along with the Universitat de Barcelona (UB), the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), the Universitat of València (UV) and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). The ranking is led by the Catholic University of Leuven, followed by Friedrich-Alexander Erlangen-Nuremberg University (FAU) and Imperial College London.

Methodology used for the assessment

To establish the classification, Reuters has relied on data collected by Clarivate Analytics, a bibliometric analysis tool that collects the scientific production of each institution, which is able to analyse its productivity and compare the performance of researchers.

The news agency classifies the institutions based on the number of patents, the relationship between licenses applied for and those granted, and the commercial impact of the research carried out by each university, which is calculated through the citation of academic articles carried out. At the UPV, the knowledge transfer tasks are carried out by the R&D+i Management Service.

The classification has been made based on the identification of the 600 universities that publish the most scientific papers. Later, this first list was filtered to those that registered a minimum of 50 patents in the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) between 2012 and 2017. Finally, the final ranking has emerged from the assessment of each university based on ten parameters linked to research, published papers and patents.
