ARWU 2020

The Shanghai ranking, internationally recognized as the world's most prestigious university indicator, consolidates the UPV as the best polytechnic university in Spain

[ 28/01/2022 ]

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), popularly known as the Shanghai ranking and internationally considered the most prestigious university indicator in the world due to the objectivity of its methodology, recognizes the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) as the best Spanish polytechnic university.

In their results made public today, ARWU also ranks up the institution led by Francisco Mora to the 301-400 range, thus achieving a significant upgrade over the previous year’s edition (401-500) -motivated, to a large extent, due to the high number of cited scientists among their lecturers-, and being the only polytechnic university in the country included among the 500 best universities in the world.

The Spanish podium, in this area, is comprised by the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), located in the 501-600 range, and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), which is in the 701-800.

6th best Spanish university

Created in 2003, ARWU includes the UPV in the international university elite for the 16th consecutive time and also ranks it as the 6th best university in Spain, tied with the Autónoma de Madrid, Pompeu Fabra and the Universidad del País Vasco.

In this sense, the UPV also improves its position with respect to the 2019 edition, in which ARWU classified it in eighth place.

Internationally recognized by all top-level rankings

Along with ARWU 2020, the other two main world university rankings, QS and THE, also endorse the UPV's teaching level. Not surprisingly, last June, the institution achieved its second best all-time record position in the QS World University Rankings (326th in the world), being also recognized as the best university in the Valencian Community.

Before, in March, the magazine Times Higher Education (THE) included the UPV among the 200 universities with the greatest social and economic impact in the world, ranked number one among Spanish polytechnic universities in this field, and top 100 in up to six of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), standing out, especially, in responsible production and consumption (16th globally).
