| Why?
|
|
Because The Cavern Club is the place that most people relate to The Beatles.
Because this is where The Beatles played live most times and certainly
where Beatlemania started.
|
| Where?
|
|
You can find The Cavern Club in Mathew Street In an
early add for the Fab Four it was said to be "Off North John St" (time to take a look at your Anthology covers!!). To improve your chances of making it there, take a look at the city centre map.

| What You Should Know
|
- The Cavern Club in Liverpool is not the original. The old Cavern
stood on the same site but was demolished in the Mid 1970's (in an act of
sheer vandalism) to make way for a new underground line (Which incidentally
was never built). The reconstruction hasn't even left the stage pointing in the same direction
As pointed out by Steven Backhouse, Nottingamshire -
England)
- The Cavern was intended to be at the beginning a Jazz club. However,
The Beatles soon got some venues in the place and partly helped to the
transformation of the local
- The Cavern wasn't the first place where The Beatles played (although
many people think so) They did it for the first time in Aug 7th
1957 It's true, though, that they certainly reached fame in the
Merseyside at this local.
- The Cavern wasn't a glamorous place (as can be seen in the picture).
When hundreds crowded in its inside, the humidity was so high that
condensated on the roof and created a not very pleasant rain, and yet
people didn't care.
- Brian Epstein went into The Cavern to find The Beatles playing. George
finding this quite odd wondered "What brings Mr. Epstein here?"
- The Cavern is not usually open during daytime, being still a Club. You
better go there at night and shake the body while you take a look.
- The Beatles probably played more hours in Hamburg than in the
Cavern. Lewishon makes an estimate of 800. However these were out of
endless sessions through the night.

| Miscellanea
|
|
There are only few and poor recordings of The Beatles at The Cavern.
Granada TV recorded a minute or so of The Fab playing there as a part of a
documentary on Merseyside music. This is, with the aid a few tapes, the
only way we have of imagining the magic atmosphere The Beatles created in
this place. After they became famous, The Beatles kept playing in The
Cavern from time to time, being their last appearance in Aug 3rd
1963. They almost played there 300 times. They had started earning 5
pounds per venue, but ended up earning 300.
