The Scalable Computing Software Laboratory (SCS) at the Dept of Computer Science in Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), USA is looking for highly qualified and self-motivated graduate students; funding is available during the entire program, but is contingent on good academic progress. The positions are in high performance system software. In particular, the focus is on the data access and management of data intensive applications, which include high performance I/O systems, distributed file systems, and memory hierarchical systems. Our recent work in these areas includes bridging parallel file systems (PFS) with Hadoop file systems (HDFS) for high performance data analytics, enhancing PFS, HDFS, and software environments such as Hadoop and Spark for big data applications, and developing new execution paradigms and architectures for data intensive applications. Dr. Sun’s research is currently supported by US National Science Foundation (NSF), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and Department of Energy (DoE). His students, after graduation, usually got jobs in national laboratories, academia, and leading companies such as Google, Facebook, Oracle, etc.

Prof. Sun is a university distinguished professor and an IEEE fellow. The Department of Computer Science at IIT offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science and has research strengths in high performance computing, distributed systems, data science, and algorithms. Based on the CS ranking in College Factual, the department is ranked No. 22 out of 235 CS programs, and No. 28 out of 519 CIS programs. The department has strong connections with Argonne National Laboratory, Fermi National Laboratory, and local industry. IIT, located within 10 minutes from the downtown Chicago, is a dynamic and innovative institution.
