Every exchange student coming to UPV must have medical coverage during their stay at UPV. It is very extremely important for students to arrange their health insurance in Spain before leaving their home country, as they will be able to solve any health problem that may arise more easily and economically. UPV will not admit students if they fail to produce their medical insurance documents at the moment of enrolment.
European nationals or residents are covered by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). EHIC entitles eligible citizens to healthcare through the public medical system in European Union (EU) Member States, the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland in the case of illness or injury while on a temporary stay in these countries.
Until recently, an E form -such as E111 or the E128- was required in order to be entitled to medical treatment. Currently, however, these printed forms are being replaced by the EHIC. One card is needed for each individual or member of the family. The EHIC must be obtained in the country of origin.
Health care will be provided in accordance with the legislation of the host State (for example, in some countries you will be able to receive free health care). If you have to pay any costs up front, these documents guarantee reimbursement of health care costs locally or very soon after your return home.
The European Health Insurance Card cannot be used for private sector health care providers.
Some non-European countries have health agreements with Spain. These include: Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Sweden, Morocco, etc. In such cases, you will have to contact your country public health service or the Spanish Embassy in order to obtain further information.
If you come from a different country or if you require additional cover, you may obtain private health insurance which will cover you during your study period in Spain. The cost may vary depending on the services provided.
Additionally, there is the on-campus Occupational Health Centre Juana Portaceli, which is open from 8.00 am to 8.00 pm, Monday to Friday. There is no medical service provided at the UPV on week-ends. This service helps students with any medical problems while they are on Campus. If necessary the Occupational Health Centre may transfer you to another health centre that specialises in your particular problem.
