A team from the Research Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering (IIAMA) is participating in the European project NBSPLUS (Nature-based solution services promoting local biodiversity, well-being and scalable solution). This international initiative seeks to show how the nature-based solutions (NbS) such as wetlands, floodplains or green infrastructures can contribute to combat climate change, protect biodiversity and improve people's well-being.
The project, coordinated by the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute and involving ten international partners, will carry out three pilot studies in Sweden, Canada and Spain. In the latter case, the project will focus on l’Albufera of València.
The team from the IIAMA institute of UPV is made up of Rafael Bergillos, as the lead researcher, together with Syrine Ghannem, Joaquín Andreu, Javier Paredes, Abel Solera and Alberto Mena, all of whom belong to the Water Resources Engineering group.
According to Syrine Ghannem, although nature-based solutions have gained prominence in recent years, there are still limitations in assessing their effectiveness and planning their implementation in an integrated manner. 'For this reason, NBSPLUS proposes an innovative approach: the development of the concept of "NbS Services", which will enable the creation of practical tools and decision-making methods for administrations and land managers,' says the IIAMA-UPV researcher.
In the case of l'Albufera, the UPV team will work alongside local and regional stakeholders to design and test innovative water and biodiversity management solutions, promoting participatory and informed planning.
With a 36-month duration and funded by Biodiversa+, within the European Biodiversity Strategy 2030, the NBSPLUS project seeks to promote participatory governance in climate change adaptation, strengthen international cooperation and improve the connection between local and national policies.
