The Alcoi Campus of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) has officially opened the academic year with a ceremony attended by the Rector, José E. Capilla, the Mayor of Alcoy, Toni Francés, and the Director of the Centre, Pau Bernabéu, among other personalities. The master class was given by Fernando Buchón Moragues and Francisco García García, who detailed the process of locating the first stone of the Viaduct Building, the emblematic site of the former Industrial School. This discovery was made using advanced geomatic and geophysical techniques, such as lasers, scanners and georadar, based on historical documentation from 1923 (Armand Guerra's film on the Moors and Christians and the press of the time).
Growth of the student body and the researcher community
During the ceremony, the Campus Secretary, Vicent Díez, presented the 2023/2024 academic year report, underlining the significant growth in the number of students, especially those of international origin. One out of every five students in Alcoi comes from abroad. In contrast, most of the national students come from the central regions of the Valencian Community, consolidating both the global and local dimensions of the campus. In addition, Díez stressed the increase in the economic volume generated by research, with 419 projects funded to the value of 4.6 million euros from public and private sources.
Strategic projects and the future of the campus
The campus director, Pau Bernabéu, took the opportunity to thank the Rector and the Mayor for their support for key projects, such as the refurbishment of the 'Bambú' building, the future Central Counties Science Park, and the recently acquired 8,000 square metres of green areas. Bernabéu also gave a positive assessment of his administration, highlighting three milestones: the inclusion of the Alcoi campus concept in the new statutes of the UPV, the creation of the Science Park and the development of a real campus with the incorporation of the green areas behind the Carbonell-Calle Juan Canto building in Juan Canto street.
For his part, the mayor, Toni Francés, noted the collaboration between the UPV and Alcoy City Council and pointed to the forthcoming creation of a garden and sports area on the Beniata hillside. Francés pointed out that 'never before has the Alcoy City Council invested financially in the Alcoy campus. With the Beniata, we begin a new era and project to benefit the campus and the city'.
New degrees and campus development
The Rector, José E. Capilla, closed the event by confirming that the new degrees in Textile/Chemistry, Artificial Intelligence, Cosmetics and Nutrition, as well as a Master's degree in Computer Science, are progressing well in their academic process. Capilla highlighted the sustainable growth of the Alcoi campus, which 'has experienced an outstanding evolution in recent years, growing by 25% in terms of student number, at a time of low birth rates and a shortage of scientific vocations - '.
