El Mundo Ranking

The UPV is the best university in Spain to study Biotechnology, and makes the Spanish top three in 13 degrees

[ 22/06/2021 ]

The Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) is, according to the 2021 ranking of the 50 most demanded degrees published by the newspaper El Mundo, the best university in Spain to study Biotechnology.

Additionally, the UPV is the second most outstanding university in the country in Fine Arts, Food Science and Technology, and Agricultural Engineering; and makes the Spanish top three in no less than 13 degrees.

Specifically, in addition to the four aforementioned degrees, the UPV is the third most popular university in Spain to study Building, Mechanical Engineering, Communication Technology Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Architecture, Civil Engineering, Industrial Technology Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Computer Engineering.

The main alternative to the dominance of the Madrid-Barcelona axis

Overall, the UPV is the main alternative to the dominance of the Madrid-Barcelona axis in Spain. It should be emphasised that it is the fifth university with the greatest presence in this ranking, while the four that are ahead all belong to that axis. The UPV also is the first polytechnic university in Spain in this regard.

The UPV’s top-3 positions are quadruple those of all the other Valencian universities combined

At the Valencian level, the UPV’s leadership is undisputable. In fact, the 13 top-3 positions achieved by the UPV are more than quadruple those obtained by all the other Valencian universities combined (three in total, two of them belonging to the Universitat d’Alacant –which ranks first in Social Work and third in Tourism– and one, to the Universitat de València –third in Finance and Accounting).

The best polytechnic university in Spain, according to the Shanghai ranking

The ranking positions awarded to the UPV by El Mundo confirm the international recognition that this University has been receiving for years: we may recall that it is the best polytechnic in Spain according to the Shanghai ranking (ARWU), regarded as the world’s most prestigious indicator for universities.

The ARWU –a pioneering world university ranking, since its first edition was that of 2003– has included the UPV among the 500 universities with the highest quality in the world for 16 consecutive years, thus singling it out among more than 20,000 higher education centres. It should be noted that the other two main world university rankings, QS and THE, also bear witness to the high educational level of the Valencian polytechnic university.

The UPV is the Spanish university with the greatest social and economic impact, and ranks in the world’s top 100, according to THE

In their most recent edition (June 2020), the QS World University Rankings, prepared by the consultancy firm Quacquarelli Symonds, placed the UPV in the second best position ever, as the world’s 326th, and recognised it as the best university in the Valencian Community.

Only last month, the Times Higher Education (THE) magazine went even further, and designated the UPV as the Spanish university with the greatest social and economic impact. It also placed the Valencian polytechnic university in the world’s top 100 in this respect.
