Departments co-ordinate teaching and research initiatives relating to a particular academic discipline or field of knowledge. Among other functions, academic departments are in charge of the syllabi, teaching methodologies and assessment systems of the subjects included in their fields. Furthermore, they organise PhD and postgraduate training in the Schools and Faculties, and encourage research by creating research units and projects. The UPV has the following 44 departments.
