NON-EU / EFTA STUDENTS (OVERSEAS PARTNER UNIVERSITIES)

The information in this section applies to students accepted under the following programs:

  • Direct Exchange Program with non-European institutions (North America, Australia, Asia-Pacific)
  • Erasmus KA171 students who will receive an Erasmus+ grant directly from UPV

These students can be accepted for a study program in English only (courses or projects). Keep this in mind:

  1. We only have a handful of programs taught fully in English. The courses (subjects/modules) in English offered to exchange students are mostly individual units from programs that are taught mainly in Spanish.

  2. English-taught courses (subjects/modules) are offered both to UPV degree students and to incoming exchange students. UPV degree-seeking students always enroll before exchange students.

  3. English-taught courses (subjects/modules) have limited availability. Priority is given to students accepted under these programs, but enrollment in specific courses is not guaranteed.

  4. You may combine courses from different faculties, but you must choose one host faculty and take most credits there. Enrolling in courses outside your host faculty, especially in English, can be challenging due to high demand and timetable conflicts. In our main campus in Valencia, you must also consider the distances between some faculties.

Requirements to enroll in courses (subjects/modules) taught in Spanish

Level B1 of CEFR (upper-intermediate) or higher

We welcome official SIELE or DELE certificates, but we also accept a transcript of records showing that you have completed Spanish courses in the past or a certificate signed by your home university confirming your Spanish level.

Requirements to enroll in courses (subjects/modules) or projects in English

Level B2 of CEFR (upper-intermediate) or higher

English certificates we can accept:

  • Cambrige First (B2), Advanced (C1) or Proficiency (C2)
  • TOEFL ibT (min 80 points)
  • IELTS (min. 5,5 points)
  • TOEIC (listening min. 400, reading min. 385, speaking min. 160, writing min. 150)
  • Trinity College ISE B2 or above
  • Freestyle document signed by the home university (Study Abroad Office, language teacher, etc.) confirming your current English level.
  • Native English speakers: no certificate is necessary

All language certificates must be submitted at the time of the application.

Deadline: 15 May (for arrival in September), 15 October (for arrival in late January/early February)

ERASMUS+ AND SWISS INSTITUTIONS (INTRA-EUROPEAN MOBILITY)

Italian and Portuguese native speakers, please visit the specific section below.

All language certificates must be submitted at the time of the application.

Starting from the 2026–2027 academic year, UPV will no longer accept certificates signed by the home institution stating that the student commits to improving his/her Spanish before arriving at UPV, or certificates of ongoing (unfinished) Spanish courses.

Admission will be based solely on the language certificates submitted during the official application period.

No additional Spanish language certificates will be accepted after the application period closes (*)

(*) Exception - Faculty of Fine Arts: due to the nature of its classes, this faculty will continue to accept exchange students who upload this statement (checking the third option) with their application. Admission will be conditional until the student submits a certificate proving the required level before the semester begins.

Requirements to enroll in courses (subjects/modules) or projects in Spanish

The requirement is established by each UPV School and Faculty. In most cases, it is level B1 of CEFR, sometimes B2

Please see the detailed chart for each UPV School or Faculty

Requirements to enroll in courses (subjects/modules) or projects in English

As an Erasmus / Swiss student, can I be admitted to study in English only?

In most cases, NO. Exchange students will be admitted under the assumption that they are prepared to take courses (subjects/modules) in Spanish if required.

Some exceptions apply

a) students admitted to do project work in English, such as preparation of a bachelor's or master's thesis, a research project, etc.

b) students of the ENHANCE University Alliance nominated for one of the ENHANCE Thematic Pathways.

c) exceptional cases approved by each UPV School or Faculty with certain partner universities.

ITALIAN AND PORTUGUESE NATIVE SPEAKERS (ANY EXCHANGE PROGRAMME)

The information in this section does not apply to students currently enrolled in Italian or Portuguese institutions if they are not Italian or Portuguese nationals.

General remarks

  1. Only a few full degree programs at UPV are taught entirely in English. Most English-taught courses are individual units from programs mainly delivered in Spanish. Some courses are taught in both languages (different timetable choice).
  2. English courses (subjects/modules) are available to both UPV degree students and incoming exchange students, but UPV students always enroll first.
  3. Availability of English courses is limited. Priority is given to students from regions where the native language is not closely related to Spanish (unlike Italian or Portuguese).
  4. Native speakers of Italian and Portuguese are expected to enroll in courses taught in Spanish, even if they haven’t formally studied Spanish before applying.
  5. During application and pre-arrival, students should plan a study program with courses in Spanish. Enrollment in some English-taught courses may be possible later, but only if there are available spots, which can only be confirmed during the registration period at the start of each semester.
