ENHANCE BIP Physics-informed Machine Learning Applications to Geotechnical Engineering (RWTH Aachen - 14-18 July 2025)
Erasmus program in a hybrid online-in-person format (short-term Erasmus mobility)
This activity is part of the new Erasmus+ program's intensive programs with hybrid teaching (Erasmus Blended Intensive Programs or BIPs).
What is the course about?
The objective of this program is to gain an understanding of the principles behind physics-based machine learning, as well as to explore various cases in which these methods can be applied.
The course consists of two parts: an introductory online course and a workshop held on-site at the Technical University of Aachen, Germany (RWTH Aachen).
Virtual Part - Introductory Course (July 7-11, 2025)
This week, the fundamentals of machine learning and its applications in engineering are introduced.
Topics include data preparation, optimization techniques, and basic machine learning models. Particular emphasis is placed on physics-based neural networks (PINNs), their architecture, and their connection to gradients and differential equations.
The week also includes an introduction to Python and scientific computing tools, with practical demonstrations using Jupyter Notebooks.
In-person workshop in Aachen, Germany (July 14-18, 2025)
During this week, students will apply their new theoretical knowledge in a hackathon-style workshop.
They will be assigned various tasks and problems, which they will solve in a collaborative and informal setting.
The objective of this session is to deepen the skills acquired in the theoretical seminar and share knowledge among participants.
The practical nature of the workshop will also provide a better understanding of the implementation, possibilities, and limitations of physics-based machine learning methods.
Last but not least, the hackathon is an excellent opportunity to solve interesting modeling problems and connect with students and faculty from different countries.

Teaching Approach and Concept
This course, coordinated by RWTH Aachen (Chair of Geomechanics and Underground Works), is open to students from RWTH Aachen and other universities in the European ENHANCE alliance.
Participants (20-30 in total) will learn and work together in transdisciplinary and international teams, both online and in person.
Who is it for?
4th-year undergraduate and master's degree students from the UPV in the areas of Engineering, Geophysics, Computer Science and/or ICT, and Applied Mathematics
Credits
The organizing university will issue a certificate of participation with 3 ECTS credits.
Academic Recognition
- Option 1: Recognition of an elective subject from your undergraduate or master's degree with similar content and number of credits
- Option 2 (4th-year undergraduate students only): Recognition of credits for undergraduate activities.
- Option 3: If credit recognition is not possible, you can request a reference of this BIP to be included in your student transcript
These options must be discussed with the International Office of your UPV School or Faculty before the beginning of the programme.

Inscripción y solicitudes

Si te interesa, deberás hacer una solicitud en la web de la universidad organizadora (RWTH Aachen), rellenando un formulario, adjuntando tu CV y tu expediente académico.

Deadline to apply: May 31st

Step 1

Access the Application form on the website of the coordinating university (RWTH).

You'll need to create a username and password in the "Registration" section, including an email address. We recommend using your UPV email address.

Step 2

You will receive an automatic email from RWTH International Office with a link to reconfirm your email address.

Step 3

Return to the application form website and access it from "Authentication." Complete all fields on the online form.
In the last section, you must upload your CV and a transcript of records, both in English.
You can generate your UPV transcript from the intranet (Virtual Secretary's Office). We recommend combining your undergraduate and master's transcripts in a single PDF file.

Step 4

RWTH Aachen will select students based on their academic profile, seeking diversity among participants. Selected students will be contacted around June 9th to confirm their participation and provide instructions.

Step 5

The International Exchange Programs Office will send an email to selected UPV students with instructions on how to apply for Erasmus funding.
