GreenMetric, the university environmental ranking par excellence, has recognised the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) as one of the 150 universities most committed to sustainability and the environment.
In its latest edition -UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2022-, which results have recently been published, the university currently directed by Jose Esteban Capilla occupies, specifically, the 147th position, improving 39 positions concerning the previous year despite the increase in the number of institutions analysed: 1050 universities, 94 more than in 2021.
Top 10 national and the best Technical University in Spain
At a national level, the UPV is in the eighth position in the ranking, recognising it as the best technical university in Spain and the best university in the Valencian Community in this field.
Likewise, of the 6 criteria used to carry out the ranking -energy efficiency and the fight against climate change; waste management; water resources; infrastructure; promotion of non-polluting transport, and environmental education-the UPV stands out, especially in three of them; energy efficiency and the fight against climate change, waste management and environmental education, in which it is, according to GreenMetric, among the 100 best universities in the world.
For the assessment of energy efficiency and the fight against climate change, the GreenMetric experts analyse, among others, a dozen indicators: from the use of energy-efficient electrical equipment to the implementation of the smart building programme, the number of renewable energy sources on the different campuses, the use of electricity per population, the proportion of renewable energy production about the total, the existence of greenhouse gas emission reduction programmes, the ratio of the total carbon footprint divided by the campus population, the number of innovative programmes carried out during the Covid-19 pandemic, or the university's climate change impact programmes.
In terms of waste management, waste recycling programmes, actions against paper and plastic waste, and the treatment of organic and inorganic waste, toxic waste, and wastewater, among other aspects, are evaluated.
Finally, in terms of environmental education, GreenMetric analyses the number of sustainability-related student organisations, the number of sustainable community service projects, the proportion of funding for sustainability research as a proportion of the total, the number of sustainability-related start-ups, university programmes to address the pandemic, sustainability-related events, cultural activities and sustainability-related publications, and the existence of a sustainability website and reports.
Developed by the University of Indonesia (UI) in 2010 (95 universities from 35 countries participated in its initial edition) based on the 6 criteria mentioned above and a total of 37 indicators, GreenMetric is the benchmark ranking in the field of university sustainability and its impact, in terms of awareness and results, is internationally recognised.
