UPV-Huawei Alliance for the future 6G

Huawei launches its first joint 6G research unit with a Spanish university at the UPV

[ 10/12/2020 ]

The Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) and the Chinese multinational Huawei Technologies have launched the first Spanish Joint Research Unit to advance towards the future 6G communications system.

"Huawei has decided to invest in various centers around the world and in Spain it has chosen the Universitat Politècnica de València for its international leadership in the field of telecommunications and, mainly, 5G technologies", highlights Narcís Cardona, director of the Institute of Telecommunications and Multimedia Applications (iTEAM) of the Universitat Politècnica de València and professor in the ETS of Telecommunications Engineering of the UPV.

The creation of this research unit at the UPV is the result of almost two years of work. It all started in June 2019, with the celebration in Valencia of Global 5G Event, organized by the iTEAM of the UPV. “That event made Valencia the world capital of 5G and reinforced the international leadership of our university in this field. Already then we had an interview with the president of Huawei, the first contacts that now bear fruit in the start-up of a pioneering research unit in our country”, highlights Narcís Cardona.

The agreement signed by both entities has an initial duration of five years - extendable for another five. Huawei will invest around one million euros each year to carry out different world-leading research projects on 6G technology.

The projects will be chosen by a committee made up of five experts from the Chinese multinational led by Wen Tong, CTO, Huawei Wireless, and another five from the iTEAM of the Universitat Politècnica de València: Narcís Cardona, as director of the Joint Research Unit, Jose F. Monserrat, José Capmany, Eva Antonino and Pascual Muñoz.

“6G will create a new generation of mobile networks beyond the cellular networks as we know them today. For us, having been chosen by Huawei represents a great boost to the UPV's international leadership regarding the design of future mobile technologies, as well as an unprecedented opportunity to play a key role in the future of technological progress”, said the rector Francisco Mora who, accompanied by the vice-rector for research, innovation and transfer José E. Capilla, today inaugurated the Joint Research Unit between the Chinese multinational and the Universitat Politècnica de València.

The first working meeting of the UPV-Huawei Unit took place today, electronically. "Today we have taken the first of the steps in a relationship that Huawei considers key in its strategy of alliances with pioneers in global research," said Wen Tong.
