2nd Design Factory Congress

Bionic arms, fire-fighting aircrafts and energy-efficient vehicles among the prototypes made by students

[ 04/05/2023 ]

The Universitat Politècnica de València has held the second edition of the Design Factory Congress, a gathering of different teams working on the development of disruptive projects, mostly technology-based.

During the congress, held on 28 April, the different groups presented the projects they are working on: from the creation of bionic arms, the construction of an aircraft for detecting and extinguishing fires or the manufacture of a highly energy-efficient vehicle capable of travelling 1,300 kilometres on just one litre of ethanol.

These are just some of the works that can be seen in this congress inaugurated by the rector of the Universitat Politècnica de València, José E. Capilla Romá. The Director-General for Innovation, Sonia Tirado, and the Director-General for Entrepreneurship and Cooperativism, Teresa García Muñoz, also wanted to see first-hand the achievements of UPV students.

A pioneering and unique project in Spanish universities

Design Factory was born in 2014 with the aim of promoting the talent of its students. Since then, the number of teams and participants has grown to over 2000 people from different UPV degrees. The programme is supported by the faculty staff. It is a project that "is still unique in the Spanish university context. For us, it is key to providing the comprehensive training that students need," said the rector, José E. Capilla Romá.

It has the support and collaboration of the Administration and a large number of companies which, in his words, "are helping to generate a pool of talent in the Valencian Community which is fundamental for our future".

Synergies among students

This initiative allows students from different disciplines to get to know each other, develop joint projects and achieve success through participation in international university competitions: it also puts into action the so-called cross-curricular competencies, which are essential for facing the world of work beyond academic training. "Employers are looking for people who have done more than just being in the classroom," explains Vicente Colomer, head of the UPV EcoMarathon team, which is developing a low-consumption carbon fibre vehicle.

Participating in any of the Design Factory teams is a plus in higher education, as "it allows you to put into action everything you have learned and develop a lot of new tools, be in contact with companies, learn to solve problems", states Juan Carlos Miralles, 4th-year student of Aerospace Engineering and member of the UPV Aerodesign team.

There are 71 Design Factory groups specialising in different disciplines such as architecture, innovation in the agri-food industry, mechanical engineering, aviation, satellites and neuroscience.
